Dear Fred
I relate well to my boss, but I also struggle not to get lost in his faults. I can say how it's not about me and that I just need to do my job, but how do I express to him real problems that hurt the way that business is being handled?

Are you exceeding your responsibility in trying to do you boss’s job? When he leaves town I do not think you sit at his desk. Therefore, I suggest you stay with your responsibilities. If you feel you can be helpful then with courtesy try to point out solutions rather then problems. I suspect he knows several of the problems but simple does not know the answers. Unless you have an answer I suggest you do not bring up the problems.
